I agree entirely Ann. I think the SHU is already on its way down. There are very few members. I recently had a reading with an SNU medium, just to see what he was like, and compare notes with a wonderful reading I had. It was all wishy washy stuff, and the information that came through was either totally wrong, ot could have applied to anyone. There was not one piece of evidence that stood out and grabbed you. Small wonder, then, that people nowadays think so little of mediumship, and that it has become a playground for frauds and charlatans. I don’t know whether the medium I paid to have a reading was a fraud or just delusional – either way, he certainly needed to work on his mediumship and should not be offering his services until they are fully developed. I like the analogy to artists. Everyone can draw to varying degrees, but there are very few artists around who reach the standard of a Michelangelo. I believe outstanding mediums, like outstanding artists, are born, not made.

I will give a prediction now and it is this: that the SNU will fall because it is only catering for wealthy people with pretensions of being a medium. It is no longer a calling but a fashion accessory. No one can forget the statements which the tutors at Stansted made. These were to become official in the SNU, but when they received letters and comments on the subjects they did notlike this one bit. They tried to write letters defending the indefensible, which was makover of the Spirit world, as if it needed that. The spirit world wil go its own sweet way with or without the statements of the SNU. We as Spiritualists cannot dictate to the source which underpins this “reality”.

Hi Denzil,

I do not dispute the seance room effects you describe. However, Thompson’s alleged guide has made a specific statement as to HOW the effect will be produced in his seance room.

Thompson states:

““William has explained that the technique being experimented with is similar to the process that causes the Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights).”

The process that causes the Aurora Borealis is TOTALLY DEPENDENT upon it occuring in conditions that are ONLY present in the Earth’s UPPER atmosphere. That is why you will never see it happening down the park or at the end of your street!

Logically therefore, the alleged guide’s claim must be false.

When I was a bus driver years ago, I used have 25 freecopies sent to me every month and at the end of each journey, I used to place one on one of the seats for anyone of my passengers who was interested to read. Many thanks for your request for explanation regarding my alleged conduct whilst in the employ of Greater Manchester Police.

My dismissal from that job was based not on my conduct whilst in that employ – in fact they were not aware of my Philosophical Beliefs/Religion -but based solely on the remarks made by others. It was alleged that whilst conducting research for my two Master of Arts Degrees at the then Residential Police Training Centre at Bruche near Warrington in Cheshire that I handed out research material to Probationer Officers.

I had already ceased attending the Training Centre when the Head of that Centre disseminated my Posters etc., to Trainers. The subject of my PhD in Parapsychology was to be “Do/Can the Police use Psychics”. I have all the letters to support my position during that period from 2004 and 2007
.
I also have letters of apology, confirmation of which you which you can view at Power v Greater Manchester Police Authority UKEAT.

As I said in the contribution above, you will no doubt remark What!!
.
What might be born in mind is that whilst taking on 3 separate Police Forces I alone, without help from anyone else, established a ‘landmark’ ruling regarding Spiritualism, and now for the first time in History, Spiritualism is to be at the heart of a Claim at the European Court of Human Rights. I will again be doing that on my own, having completed the 120 page Legal Argument and Submitted it to the Court and obtained an Application Number regarding its acceptance.

If nothing else, applaud me for having the courage to stand up for my Beliefs. There has been none before me, and alas I see no one standing beside me.

Perhaps he would care to explain this report in the Manchester papers. As a Spiritualist I make my beliefs known but never try to foist them on others or conduct any for psychic/mediumship in the workplace or while training in other capacities.

Spiritualism is going through a metamorphosis not only in the SNU but throughout all communication with the Spirit world and the psychical. In modern Spiritualism we have only come from the 1830′s to the present and even in the 60,s Mediums were being prosecuted under archaic laws.
If you look at recent history before the ‘war to end all wars’ and the second world war most humans were broken down into rival tribes and constantly fighting. Most of the world has seen the error of its ways in this and it is getting better. (All be it slowly).
I believe thee Spiritualist movement is doing the same and will see that unity is better than this constant bickering.

The first SNU church that I attended was in 1952. It was also the last. Far too dictatorial. Horses wear blinkers in order not to see what is happening around them. The SNU hierachy were wearing blinkers in 1952 and, sad to say, they still do.

As the person who was at the heart of the purchase of PN from STF, I and Roy are the only ones who really know what was discussed and agreed at that time. I cannot comment on the decisions of the SNU had in closing PN, but I can say I was saddened by it. I am pleased it has found a new form and wish it well. I would now like to see all the hitting back stopping and that the new PN starts with love and light. I repeat only Roy and I know this history of what was discussed and agreed at that time.

I recently sat with a ‘physical medium’ who has attracted much negativity and was named in an article in the Independent Newspaper.

The ‘seance’ was outrageous and blatantly fraudulent. Frankly he did more to harm than help Spiritualism. When I voiced my concerns to a few people I was shouted down and told I was jealous because I did not have his ability. Nothing could be further from the truth. I want to witness the promised but never appearing ‘full materialization’ – the entire farce has left a bad taste in my mouth. None of this has had any effect on my own beliefs in survival but it surely must have a negative affect on the movement. ‘Mediums’ (and I use that term loosely) who persist in this type of deceit need to stop now! There is a place I believe for genuine physical mediumship but we need to separate the wheat from the chaff if it is to be taken seriously.

As someone who attended the church only a few times but is a neighbour who lives in Belgravia I would suggest that the up keep of such a stunning building is the main reason for the move. The leaseholder is Grosvenor Estates owned by the Duke of Westminster the largest land owner in the UK. Grosvenor have many many conditions in both there freeholds and leaseholds relating to the upkeep of the facade of houses within the Grosvenor Estate of which Belgrave Square is the centre piece. As a home owner in the estate my freehold states that my property must be painted every 5 years. To do this I need to hire a scaffolder whom I must choose from the Grosvenor Estates list of approved contractors who of course are double that of a regular scaffold firm, the lower part of the scaffolding must be encased with a wooden surround 6 feet high and painted cream (the same as the building must be painted which again is a stipulated colour by Grosvenor. The upper parts must be enclosed in green mesh to hide the structure and alarmed if another property is attached to mine. To have those contractors come I need to pay them Central London rates along with the congestion charge and parking at £4.40 an hour.

I also must pay rates to Grosvenor for things such as private security and parking wardens who are employed by Grosvenor to patrol the area and gardens to maintain the private gardens around the estate. All of this along with the regular bills of gas, electricity, council tax. It really is quite ridiculous and for the millionaires and embassies on the square I’m sure there is not problem with this. However it was clear to see by looking at the facade of 33 Belgrave Square and the adjacent properties that the SAGB did not have the resources to upkeep this beautiful building. Also they had a leasehold and not freehold on the property which is had only another 30 years or so on it. It is clear the organisation would never have had the funds to buy the freehold to the property as it would cost in the tens of millions. So what do you do…. Spend money on a building which you do not own and will never do so. Do you let it deteriorate further for the next 30 years to hand it back to Grosvenor and walk away with nothing or do you take what you can, sell the remainder of the lease take that money and move to something you can afford and also have some money in the bank for the future once all the outstanding debts (of which there were many) have been paid. Grosvenor also considered the SAGB to be a business and so no special dispensations were made to the organisation which there would have been if they had recognised SAGB as a charity.

To say it is nepotism that Annie is taking over the running of the SAGB from Stella is a disgrace. The last few years are not something you would wish on anyone. Both these lovely ladies health has suffered greatly wondering how they can keep the organisation running and the building which they both deeply love and care for.

There are many families up and down the country who have had to do the same over the last couple of years. If you they money going out is less than what is coming in you have to make some drastic alterations. I think the move to Belgrave Road is a great alternative to there being no place at all.

I wish the SAGB all the best in there new home and am looking forward to seeing someone who has the resources to spent on 33 Belgrave Square bring her back to full potential and not be the disgrace of the square.

If Spiritualism is supposed to be registered at the Home Office as a religion then I would have thought that we should have the same equal rights legally as other faiths regarding stating our choice and using a hospital chapel for flowers etc. Whatever the circumstances any dictatorial attitude which prevents this freedom should be legally dealt with.

I hope that this Psychic News will broaden its out look beyond just the churches. I hope that it will begin to look what is going on in science and print aspects of philosophy. In other words what Spiritualism used to be and do. Instead of being stuck in the principle mode of S.N.U or Christian Spiritualism. I do realise that if it goes down the same trail as the old Psychic News then it will go the same way. If it broadens its aspect of news then it will succeed.Please broaden its outlook.

I can agree with what you say. Opinions and attitudes change by region and I can confirm it is the same with hospitals in the main, the chaplains at hospitals have all the say. There are exceptions to this, one hospital in our area has a Spiritualist on the advisory panel yet another in the same trust will not allow it and we had a bit of a carry on when we asked to place flowers in the chapel. It seems the pious lady who looked after it would have none of it and I feel all we can do is to keep plodding away. we will win through in the end.

When I was a Student Nurse, some 30 yrs ago ( at New Cross, Wolverhampton), I was told that I had to be “C of E” or “Catholic” as Spiritualism wasn’t allowed. And I could keep my opinions to myself. I was disciplined for doing readings for fellow Nurses both in breaks and on my days off. They never broke me. They knew they couldn’t sack me for it, and so did I. It cost me a job when I qualified, but I got a post with another Hospital.

A few years later, I was admitted as a Patient in Norwich, and I stated that I was a Spiritualist. i was dismayed that they wrote ” C of E” on my nameplate. When I asked the Sister to change it, they refused.

On a more positive note, I later joined Leicestershire Constabulary, and was amazed at how they encouraged people to express their beliefs.

Is this an exception to the rule and does it differ in other regions. In Fife Scotland mediums are often asked quietly by the local constabulary to help in their enquiries. I can however confirm Nurses and Staff in some Hospitals in Fife are given a hard time if they mention spiritualism especially to Students or Trainee Nurses and they learn to say little.

Glad to hear that the republishing of P.N. in printed paper format is only a few short weeks away.
I will of course be subscribing and coupled to that hoping that P.N. will allow me to submit/write a number of FULL PAGE articles about my efforts to ensure that Spiritualism and fellow Spiritualists will never again be discriminated against in the workplace – and also give Spiritualists the first ever opportunity to express an opinion or submit a comment to the European Court of Human Rights. (will explain that in the proposed articles)

I shudder to think of what the inclusion of such articles in P.N. might cost me!

So what is it that I have to share with fellow believers?
.
In October 2008 I was employed by Greater Manchester Police (GMP) for a short period of time. I was dismissed on the spot. The wording of the letter of dismissal contained the words “..your work with neighbouring forces and your current work in the psychic field”.
.
I took the matter to an Employment Tribunal, subsequently establishing an unprecedented landmark ruling regarding the belief in Psychics/Mediums and Spiritualism in particular.
.
I alone represented myself at all stages and prepared all submissions – I was one person against the State. At the EAT Hearing where I successfully argued in favour of Spiritualism and established the precedent, GMP had as their representative a Barrister who was a Q.C. – one if Her Majesty’s Counsels
.
There are lots of interesting twists and turns to the story – most of which will not fail to cause you to ponder and ask the question “WHAT!!”. Overjoyed at the return of PN in paper format !!! Reading on-line isn’t the same as being able to dip ino it as and when. Occasionally I would leave my copy on the bus or in the doctor’s waiting room hoping that some soul might glance at it and may be just a tad curious thus setting them off on their own spiritual quest. Why not sell it in newsagents as we want to get our message to as many as possible ! xxx

Fascinating, the warmth of the man was evident in the Queen’s Speech, it is a shame that spiritualism has been hijacked by some, as I genuinely believe gifted individuals can help to ease the pain.
Today a lovely package came to me in Spain, it is Swaff’s personal poems to his wife, Helen, they date from 1904 and are about a dozen in number.
There are also 2 of which I have not yet identified, HE or WE Larkin/ Lawson or Lawton dated same, and entitled to Your dear friend, and the other is dated 21 January 1913 SGH I think, any ideas???

I wanted to send an email but couldn’t get through. What I wanted to say was that Spiritualism’s appeal for me over the last 33 years hasn’t been the amazing stuff, but rather the everyday comfortable ordinariness.
When I first attended Spiritualist churches in my twenties I was impressed and sceptical at the same time. Nobody was telling me things to make money. I just wasn’t accustomed to accepting what other people (mediums) said they saw and heard.
Not a problem. I joined an open circle and was taught the basics of mediumship. No fuss. No being made to feel “you must have faith in what the special people tell you”. There was a sense of equality, not only with fellow spiritualists, but with those on the other side of life as well, once I learned how hard it can be to get through.
I agree with the analogy to music. True artists are a joy to be with, but all of us enjoy a singsong when we get the chance. I did very well with psychometry at first and later with clairvoyance. When I was asked to go on the platform I called a halt to my research. I had been able to prove to myself that if I could receive messages that only made sense to a particular individual, then I could understand and believe messages from experienced mediums.
People on the other side rarely send amazing communications. They are usually of the everyday variety, about little things we shared with loved ones. The sense of humour is, for me, the biggest convincer. My friend and I were at Portobello Spiritualist Church in Scotland. The medium was talking about a distant cousin of my mate, from Perth. She thought the Scottish town, but he’d gone to the Australian one. Next thing this cousin said was “We all had a good laugh the other day about your baggy trousers.”
David and I nearly fell of our seats. He’d lost weight and his trousers had fallen round his ankles the day before as he carried dishes to the kitchen. He couldn’t grab the trousers ‘cos his hands were full and could reach to put the crockery down ‘cos his feet were trapped. I couldn’t help ‘cos I was rolling on the floor laughing.
It was no surprise that family members keep an eye on us. However, the idea that one sees a funny, embarrassing moment and can call in all the rest to see, takes getting used to. Just like ordinary family life though.
